Woodstock Golf & Country Club League

CSSL U10 & U13 Girls Soccer Blitz 2006/07

The under 10s kicked off the blitz in style, with some great performances by the five clubs involved – Lifford, who entered two teams, Connolly Celtic, Mountshannon and Moneypoint.

Each team played each other once, with matches lasting a duration of ten minutes. Moneypoint proved to be the strongest team in the competition and went through it unbeaten and with a 100% winning record but the emphasis was on fun, and that was something Mountshannon’s Amy Barrett enjoyed the most:

“I really like playing soccer because it’s really good fun. I play with my friends, we train a lot and it’s really good. The matches went well and we all just want to play some more games.”

Next up was the under 13s and there were six teams in all in this event – Connolly Celtic, Bridge United and Lifford all entering two teams. It was run on a League basis, where the team which collected the most amount of points won it out and that proved to be Lifford.

Connolly Celtic’s Katie Cahill liked the blitz: “I was very happy to play in it. I would like if something like this was held again because we get to play matches and improve.

Bridge United and Lifford are strong opponents and we like testing ourselves against them. I have friends in these clubs and it’s always nice to be able to play against them.”

So, congratulations to all teams who participated on the day and to the players, who did themselves and their clubs proud. There are plans to run further blitzes for girls, especially at the younger age groups but these will be held after Christmas at the earliest.

CSSL U15 Girls Soccer Blitz 2005/06

Four U15 girls teams competed in a soccer blitz held at Lees Rd on Sunday. The four clubs, Newtown, Connolly Celtic, Bridge Utd and Lifford are affiliated to the Clare Schoolboys and Schoolgirls Soccer League and will commence a league competition in January.

Schoolgirls soccer was last played in Clare in the late eighties and early nineties, following on from the Community Games success of teams such as Cloughleigh at County, Munster and National level.  U14 and U16 teams from Cloughleigh Celtic, Lifford, Newmarket Celtic, Kilkishen Celtic and Newtown among others, competed in league, cup and blitz competitions. These leagues continued through U17 and youths with two divisions of a Senior league played during the same period.

Mrs Sheila Guerin, Woodstock Golf & Country Club presented a cheque to the League Registrar Mr. Gerry Woods for sponsorship of this league.

CSSL intends to extend competitions to other age groups in the coming seasons, where interest is expressed from clubs.  Any club interested in entering a team in the U15 league competition should contact the CSSL registrar or any member of the league as soon as possible.

There were some excellent team displays and individual performances in the six friendly matches played on astro turf.  Newtown had mixed fortunes with their results, having a win, draw and loss in their three matches. Ciara Hannon was their star performer while Chloe Neylon and Daniel Purtill were among their goalscorers. Brendan Wall’s team performed well on Sunday and are looking forward to the commencement of the league.

Despite losing their matches, Bridge Utd had some promising performances from Niamh Corry, Bernadette Crowe, Katie Connor and goalkeeper Leona Murphy. With a little more match practice, Margaret O’Hallorans side will prove difficult to beat in the league.

Mike Hehir’s Connolly Celtic have a panel of 22 players and all were eager to impress. Shona Enright scored all three of their goals in the blitz as they defeated Bridge Utd and drew with Lifford and Newtown. Lisa Kennedy, Sarah Reidy, Orla Keane and Aine Keane also played well.

Damien Walsh’s young Lifford side proved too strong for Newtown and Bridge Utd and played out a scoreless draw with Connolly Celtic. Saoirse Lenihan, Naoimi Carroll and Laurie Ryan were among their goalscorers while Roisin McMahon and Shauna Woods were excellent.
