AVENUE UNITED HISTORY 1983 to 1997
Avenue United was founded in April
1983 at a meeting in Mickey Kerin's Bar in Lifford Ennis. The founding
members were David Connellan, Anthony McMahon, Sean Downes and Gerard
O'Grady all of whom were from Marian Avenue & Steele's Terrace in Ennis.
These and other lads from the area had been involved with various Junior
Soccer teams in Ennis, particularly Lifford F. C, and had decided it was
time to branch out and form their own club, based in Marian Avenue.
In Avenue United's first season in the Clare &
District Soccer League (Div.2 1983-84) the Avenue panel comprised only of
players from Marian Avenue & Steele's Terrace and had no less than seven
sets of brothers - Casey's, Mounsey's, Purtill's, McMahon's, Connellan's,
Guilfoyle's, and Lyon's. They captured the Div.2 League & Shield titles
without losing a single match and in the following '84-85 season added the
1st Div. League & Shield trophies in the process creating a record of
going 42 matches without defeat.
With promotion to the Premier League in
1985-86 new 'outside' players were drafted into the panel. During this
season Avenue reached the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup, but were
beaten by Ballincollig of Cork 2 - nil, at Turner's Cross. They won the
Munster Clare Area Final against Newmarket and also won the Haughey Cup,
for the first time, against the same opposition, after a replay. This was
to be the first of an historic three-in-a-row Haughey Cup wins.
The Avenue had truly arrived at this stage but
the best was yet to come. In 1987-88 the club won a previously unrecorded
Grand Slam of Premier League & Shield, Haughey Cup, Munster & FAI Clare
Area Finals. The Haughey Cup was won by a score line of 6-nil!
In 1989 team manager Anthony 'Boob' McMahon
retired having had the distinction of being the most successful manager in
Clare League history. The club progressed fielding successful Youths and B
Teams, and later Schoolboys teams.
In 1990 the Avenue became the first Clare Club
ever to reach the FAI Junior Cup Final after a great Cup campaign. In the
final in Dalymount they were unfortunately beaten by a superb Cherry
Orchard side, 2-nil.
During the 1990's the Avenue have maintained a
high standard. No season has ever passed without some silverware being
captured. In 1993 and 1995 they captured the Cheers Cup against Bridge Utd
and Cloughleigh respectively. They were runners-up to St. Pats in the
Cheers/Carling Cup final on two occasions and have been consistent in the
Premier League, never finishing outside the top three. Up to 1997 the
Avenue had won the all important Premier League 4 out of the previous 5
years.
In 1996 the club expanded by adding Schoolboys
teams and have fielded teams in the U/8, U/10, U/12, U/13, U/15, U/16,
Youths (U/18) and two Junior teams, A and B. Each panel has approximately
18 players giving a grand total of over 160 players catered for by the
Club.
The Club has a short but dramatic history.
Long may it prosper!
